Catching Up with Rebecca Gray

Rebecca! You have been on the team at Jacob Burton Studios since July of 2019. It has been an honor to have you a part of the team! What is your background as a vocal coach?

First of all, I just want to say how much I have loved being a part of this amazing vocal community you’ve built! I have been performing since I was a child and have more recently started coaching and I’m loving it. I love helping people grow in confidence and strengthen their voice in a healthy way.  With my background in classical voice I feel like I can really help strengthen the voice while also focusing on creating a healthy approach and sound!

You studied Opera at Belmont! That is incredible! What are some of the things you learned in school as it pertains to singing opera?

Answer: Ooooo- well Opera music is some of the most challenging and FUN music to sing! It is the greatest multitasking game in the world, because not only are you singing, but many times you are singing in a different language, emoting in that language to the audience who doesn’t know the language, translating in your head, watching the conductor for cues, and don’t forget acting the part with any blocking or stage choreography! haha. I think studying classical voice taught me how to properly use my instrument, whether I use it for opera, pop, country, or any other style or genre. It gave me the foundation and then allowed me to branch out and sing other styles in a healthy way.

What is your favorite performance of your career thus far?

Rebecca Gray

This is a tough question. I was in Madame Butterfly with the Nashville Opera and it was a blast. I also love leading worship, anytime, anywhere. I had the opportunity to sing on a CeCe Winans album with some phenomenal singers so I’ll never forget that experience either!

Which leads me to my next question! Not only have you performed classical and opera pieces, you have also recorded live worship albums! What is one piece of advice you would give to aspiring singers who do a lot of live performing?

I would tell them to drink LOTS of water, get a good amount of sleep, and don’t go out the night before where you have to scream to talk over people haha.  When performing live, I focus most of my energy on breathing. Don’t strain, just let the breath do the work!

What do you enjoy most about coaching voice?

Seeing people unlock parts of their voice they never thought they had access to.  It’s powerful and so much fun to hear someone say, “I didn’t think I could sing like that!”

What is the number one thing you feel that you have to offer singers when working with them on their voice?

I think I’m great at connecting with people and helping them achieve their specific goals. I also love working with former head voice/classical singers and helping them discover their chest voice and mix!
