3 Things to Do When Shopping for a Vocal Coach

Sometimes the search for a great vocal coach can seem overwhelming.  Typing “vocal coach” into Google can yield many different teachers with many different backgrounds and the task of choosing one can seem daunting to say the least.  Here are some tips to help you find the perfect coach!

  1. Narrow Your Search
Don’t just type “vocal coach” in the search bar. Try searching more specifically, such as “classical vocal coach in Nashville” or “commercial vocal coach in Austin.” You can get even more specific by stating whether you want the lessons in person or virtual, male or female coach, price range, etc. There are also online services such as Thumbtack that help connect you with professionals in any field. These services have reviews posted for you to see what others had to say about them. My favorite way to find help in an area is to hop on Facebook and ask my peers for recommendations and referrals!
  2. Interview a Few Coaches
Once you have whittled down your 2 or 3 top choices for coaches, reach out to see if they offer free consultations before beginning lessons. It is always a good idea to get a feel for the coach and to have the chance to ask them questions about their approach before signing on with them. You want to choose a coach who has the knowledge and experience to help you achieve your goals.
  3. Focus on Relationship
Price of lessons, online reviews and location are important, but nothing beats the relationship you will have with the coach you choose. You need to trust them and feel as though they have your best interest at heart. Choose a coach who is willing to get to know you, not just talk about themselves. Choose a coach who is willing to get to know your goals, not just take you where they think you should go. Choose a coach who will challenge you to grow and take you to places you never thought you could go vocally. You want to leave sessions inspired and motivated to continue growing your voice, not defeated and bored.

Hopefully this gets you moving in the right direction. As a singer, it is important to always continue learning. You can grow your voice at every level. Just like top athletes have personal trainers, the best singers have vocal coaches. At Jacob Burton Studios we are proud to have a team of top vocal coaches who can definitively meet all of the important qualities mentioned above. If you’re reading this blog, we would love to help you reach your specific goals for your voice! Your training and the work you put in will pay off. Happy singing my friends!
